Ar y 27ain o Dachwedd 2014 cynhaliwyd digwyddiad arbennig yng nghanolfan ymwelwyr ‘Ogwen’ ym Mhen y Benglog. Roedd gwahoddedigion yno i ddathlu penblwydd Gwarchodfa Natur Genedlaethol gyntaf Cymru yn 60 mlwydd oed.
Cafodd y safle, sydd wedi ei leoli yng nghesail Y Gribin, Glyder Fawr a’r Garn, ei ddynodi ar y 24ain o Dachwedd 1954, oherwydd y diddordeb daearegol arbennig a’r cyfuniad o blanhigion sy’n gysylltiedig a’r creigiau hynny.
On the 27th of November 2014 a special event took place at the ‘Ogwen’ visitor centre at Pen Y Benglog. Invitees were there to celebrate the 60th birthday of Wales’ first National Nature Reserve.
The site, which is shrouded by Y Gribin, Glyder Fawr and Y Garn, was designated on the 24th of November 1954, due to the geological features and associated biodiversity.

Croesawyd y siaradwyr gan Caerwyn Roberts Cadeirydd Awdurdod ParcCenedlaethol Eryri), a cafwyd areithiau gan Trystan Edwards (Ymddiriedolaeth Genedlaethol) a Tim Jones (Cyfoeth Naturiol Cymru) yn pwysleisio’r pwysigrwydd o weithio mewn partneriaeth a gwarchod safleoedd pwysig fel Cwm Idwal, yn ogystal a chyfeirio at y gwaith ymchwil fydd yn cael ei gynnal dros y flwyddyn nesaf fel rhan o’r dathliadau penblwydd (#CwmIdwal60).
The speakers were greeted by Caerwyn Roberts (Chairman of the Snowdonia National Park Authority) and speeches were given by Trystan Edwards (National Trust) and Tim Jones (Natural Resources Wales) emphasising the importance of working in partnership and conserving important sites like Cwm Idwal, as well as referring to the research that will be conducted over the coming year as part of the birthday celebrations (#CwmIdwal60).

Yr oeddem yn ffodus iawn hefyd i glywed areithiau llawn ysbrydoliaeth gan Warren Martin (Warden Cwm Idwal 1966-1973), a’r naturiaethwraig, Bethan Wyn Jones, siaradwyr hynod wybodus a oedd yn rhannu rhai eu profiadau gyda’r gynulleidfa. Un peth oedd yn glir o’r areithiau, yw bod angen cydnabod cyfraniad arloeswyr fel Evan Roberts Y Gelli, warden cyntaf Cwm Idwal, a hyfryd oedd gweld ei feibion, Eon a Peter yn rhan o’r digwyddiad.
We were very fortunate to receive very motivational speeches by Warren Martin (Cwm Idwal warden 1966 – 1973) and the botanist Bethan Wyn Jones, both being very knowledgeable in sharing their experiences with the audience. One thing that was clear from the speeches, was the need to recognise the contribution of pioneers such as Evan Roberts, the first warden of Cwm Idwal, and it was lovely to see his sons Eon and Peter as part of the event.

Elfen amlwg arall a oedd yn cael ei bwysleisio yn yr areithiau yw ei fod yn hynod bwysig i ni barhau defnyddio Cwm Idwal fel man i gynnal arolygon gwyddonol, gan rannu’r canlyniadau gyda’r cyhoedd, yn ogystal a pharhau cofnodi a dehongli enwau Cymraeg y planhiogion a’r elfennau gweledol hynny sy’n y tirlun trawiadol yma.

Another obvious element that was emphasised in the speeches was the importance of continuing to use Cwm Idwal as a site for scientific research and sharing the results with the public, as well as continuing the practice of recording and interpreting the Welsh names for the plants and landscape features found in this dramatic amphitheatre.

Ar ol yr areithiau aeth pawb i fewn i’r ganolfan ymwelwyr i fwynhau tamaid o’r gacen hyfryd a bobwyd gan Siwgr a Sbeis, Llanrwst, ac roedd gan bawb hefyd y cyfle i weld copi o lun Kyffin Williams o Evan Roberts, wedi cael lle teilwng ar y brif wal, yn ogystal a chael cyfle i bori drwy un o’r dogfennau dynodi swyddogol cyntaf.
After the speeches everyone went into the visitor centre to enjoy a piece of the delicious cake baked by Siwgr a Sbeis, Llanrwst, and there was an opportunity for all to see a copy of Kyffin Williams’ portrait of Evan Roberts on the main wall as well as leafing through one of the original designation documents.
Ar ol cael paned a chacan roedd cyfle i fynd am dro i weld canolbwynt y dathliad, sef Cwm Idwal ei hun. Cafom ein anrhydeddu a thywydd gwych ac roedd y golygfeydd i lawr Nant Ffrancon yn odidog.
After a cake and a cuppa, there was the chance to go for a walk to see the main reason for the celebrations, Cwm Idwal itself. We were honoured with excellent weather, and the views down Nant Ffrancon were breathtaking.
Roedd y digwyddiad hefyd yn gyfle i gydnabod y gwaith ymareferol hanfodol sydd wedi cael ei wneud gan yr holl wirfoddolwyr, contractwyr a’r cyn-fugail, Gwyn Thomas, a’r bugail presennol, Bob Doyle.
Fel rhan o ddathliadau dynodiad Gwarchodfa Natur Genedlaethol Cwm Idwal yn 60 dros y flwyddyn nesaf byddem yn cyd-weithio gyda ysgolion lleol a phrifysgol Bangor i gynnal arolygon bywyd gwyllt. This event was also an opportunity to recognise the essential practical work carried out on site by all the volunteers, contractors, past shepherd Gwyn Thomas, and the current Shepherd Bob Doyle.
As part of celebrating the 60th birthday of Cwm Idwal National Nature Reserve, we will, over the course of the coming year, be working with local schools and Bangor University to conduct wildlife surveys.
