{"id":608,"date":"2018-08-03T13:51:43","date_gmt":"2018-08-03T12:51:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.cwmidwal.cymru\/?page_id=608"},"modified":"2026-03-12T15:50:12","modified_gmt":"2026-03-12T15:50:12","slug":"geology","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.cwmidwal.cymru\/en\/geology\/","title":{"rendered":"Geology"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"breadcrumbs align  wp-block-bcn-breadcrumb-trail has-text-color has-background\" vocab=\"https:\/\/schema.org\/\" typeof=\"BreadcrumbList\">\n\t<span><\/span>\n\t<span property=\"itemListElement\" typeof=\"ListItem\"><a property=\"item\" typeof=\"WebPage\" title=\"Go to Cwm Idwal National Nature Reserve.\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cwmidwal.cymru\/en\/\" class=\"home\" aria-current=\"page\"><span property=\"name\">Cwm Idwal National Nature Reserve<\/span><\/a><meta property=\"position\" content=\"1\"><\/span><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Cwm Idwal was designated as a National Nature Reserve in 1954, primarily because of the unique geology found here, and secondly on account of those rare plants that have colonised along the slopes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In Cwm Idwal there are sedimentary, igneous and metamorphic rocks that were formed during the Ordovician era, around 450 million years ago. These rocks were formed through sedimentation processes on the sea bed as well as volcanic processes that produced strata of dust, ash and lava flows, followed by forces of compression and consolidation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"854\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cwmidwal.cymru\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/GNGCI-012-854x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-489\" style=\"aspect-ratio:16\/9;object-fit:cover\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.cwmidwal.cymru\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/GNGCI-012-854x1024.jpg 854w, https:\/\/www.cwmidwal.cymru\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/GNGCI-012-250x300.jpg 250w, https:\/\/www.cwmidwal.cymru\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/GNGCI-012-768x921.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.cwmidwal.cymru\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/GNGCI-012-940x1127.jpg 940w, https:\/\/www.cwmidwal.cymru\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/GNGCI-012-500x600.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.cwmidwal.cymru\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/GNGCI-012.jpg 1334w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 854px) 100vw, 854px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Later, around 40 million years ago, huge tectonic forces were folding and compressing these stratae further as tectonic plates collided creating the form of folded waves in the earth\u2019s crust.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The troughs of these folds are known as synclines, and the Idwal syncline can be seen running up Twll Du (Devil\u2019s Kitchen) and the head of Cwm Idwal. On both sides of Twll Du, we see where the sea bed was raised. It is possible to see evidence of this today in the form of Brachiopod fossils, which were animals that lived on the sea bed around 400 million years ago. One of those was the geologist and ecologist Charles Darwin. He visited Cwm Idwal when learning geological investigation techniques with his teacher Adam Sedgwick in 1831.  In 1842 Charles Darwin returned to Cwm Idwal after studying glaciers in Tierra del Fuego, S. America.
